CANDIDATE OPPORTUNITY:

Head of Talent

for

Executive Summary

Oral diseases are among the most prevalent diseases in the world. In fact, poorly treated dental decay and cavities are the most common chronic disease globally, affecting 2.3 billion people worldwide. There is also a strong connection between oral health and general health: a problem in the mouth that goes undiagnosed can result in serious medical issues. Yet most dental practices use technology that is woefully outdated, resulting in inconsistent diagnoses and treatment plans.

Overjet is on a mission to improve oral health for all. Overjet is developing a SaaS platform combining deep learning and data science to enable better dental care. By combining deep knowledge of dentistry with advanced engineering and a focus on user experience, Overjet’s platform enables more accurate diagnostics, improved operational efficiency, and better communication between insurance carriers, dentists, and patients.

Growth

Since being founded in 2018, the company has quickly grown to become the dominant player in the space, working with the majority of dental insurance carriers in the U.S. and supporting nearly 50% of U.S. dental insured patients. Overjet has never lost a sales bid to a competitor in a head-to-head competition.  As a ‘remote first’ company, Overjet has grown to 100+ employees across the U.S

Capitalization

Overjet has raised ~$80M cumulatively from Insight Partners, Crosslink Capital, General Catalyst, and E14.

Role

An action-oriented recruiter and organization builder to elevate and maintain Overjet’s bar for talent while enabling our business to scale.

Platform

Overjet has two types of customers: dental practices and insurance carriers. Their platform provides practices more accurate diagnostics, suggestions to improve treatment plans and better explanatory tools for patients, and provides carriers a more efficient way to assess claims.

Why You Should Care

  • They're improving people's health.

There is massive variation in diagnostic ability and consistency from dentist to dentist, meaning many people aren’t getting the treatment they need. And everyone has a mouth!

  • They are *dominating* their industry.

They’ve won every RFP they’ve submitted and have never lost a head to head sales pitch. By the end of this year their platform will touch more than half of all dental insured patients in the U.S.

  • The business has been de-risked.

They have clear product-market fit and their unit economics are rock solid. You can focus on building out a world-class talent function without many of the worries and distractions of other startups.

  • They have plenty of money in the bank.

They’ve raised over $80M, closing a Series B at the end of 2021 from General Catalyst, Insight Partners, and Crosslink Capital and E14.

  • They are on an IPO-track.

The company’s leadership, investors, capital base, growth, and traction suggest this is an IPO track company.

  • They are female led.

Overjet’s founder and CEO Wardah Inam is already a leader in tech and healthcare with an ever increasing profile in the tech industry.

About Overjet

Overjet is developing a SaaS platform combining deep learning and data science to enable better dental care. By combining deep knowledge of dentistry with advanced engineering and a focus on user experience, Overjet’s platform enables more accurate diagnostics, improved operational efficiency, and better communication between payers, providers, and patients.

Overjet is segmented into two different business lines: one focused on dental offices (“practices)” and the other on insurance companies (“payers”), each of which benefit from the platform in different ways:

  • For payers: The platform’s NLP and machine learning capabilities help automate claim reviews, assessing both the patient’s policy’s coverage of the claim and the probability the claim is fraudulent, saving payers from paying out on uncovered or fraudulent claims.

  • For practices: The platform’s image processing and data visualization capabilities enable practices to more accurately diagnose patients while making it easier for patients to understand why a given treatment plan is recommended. The platform also provides practices with recommendations on optimizing its operational efficiency. As a result, implementing practices have seen 60-70% YoY revenue increases and patients get a better experience.

Overjet typically charges payers a few million dollars for initial implementation followed by a volume-based, per-claim fee.  Practices pay a monthly subscription.

Since being founded in 2018, the company has quickly grown to become the dominant player in the space: today Overjet works with the majority of dental insurance carriers in the USA - collectively representing over 75 million patients - and by the end of the year expects to be supporting nearly 50% of the dental insured patients in the USA.  Its two closest competitors (Pearl and Videa) trail Overjet on customer adoption and capital raised.  Overjet’s Head of Sales says it’s the “easiest sales job I’ve ever done”. Indeed, Overjet has never lost a sales bid to a competitor in a head-to-head competition.

As a ‘remote first’ company, Overjet has grown to 100+ employees across the U.S and has raised approximately $80M cumulatively from Insight Partners, Crosslink Capital, General Catalyst, and E14., and have tens of millions of revenue.

Further expansion is also planned. In 2023, Overjet will also make a stronger push into international markets.  And dentistry may just be the beginning:  unique among medical professions, dentistry is the only one where asymptomatic patients receive medical imaging (x-rays) regularly on a longitudinal basis. This provides potential opportunities to leverage that data to predict both dental and other health-related issues.

As growth continues, a key focus for Overjet is to ensure the reliability, security, and compliance of its technology platform while continuously improving the user experience.

As Overjet continues to scale, it is seeking a Head of Talent to own three main responsibilities:

  1. Establish talent standards and build recruiting systems to continuously raise the talent bar.

  2. Build a data-driven recruiting org that enables the company to reach its headcount targets.

  3. Act as a partner to the rest of the organization to build a “culture of recruiting” and ensure the recruiting org is supporting the corporate strategy.

Overjet’s Culture

  • Fast paced. They truly do value speed of execution - not for speed’s sake, but as a result of having a constant focus on generating results and growing the company. It has an opportunity to dominate its industry (and perhaps beyond) and is relentlessly focused on doing that. People are happy but work hard.

  • Highly Collaborative. There’s not a lot of focus on titles here. People are expected to take ownership and work together to achieve the common mission.

  • Meritocratic. The bar for talent is high. A drive for speed and results is required. People who are good fit stay; people who are not are given a generous severance package and asked to leave. People have OKRs that are reviewed regularly and give each other feedback regularly.

What We’re Looking For…

Experience

You have experience…

  • In both agency and corporate recruiting

  • As a head or director of recruiting in a Series B+ or later startup

  • Managing recruiters, sourcers, and recruiting ops team members

  • Managing recruiting across technical, business, and executive roles

  • Building and managing a data-driven recruiting operations function

  • In organizations known for having high standards for talent

Traits & Personality

You are…

  • Relentless in maintaining a high talent bar. You consider yourself the ‘guardian of the talent bar’ and aren’t afraid to push back on the executive team or hiring managers if you feel that bar isn’t being maintained. Moreover, you are effective in helping others raise their eye for talent. You move fast but will never sacrifice that bar for speed (and won’t let others do that, either).

  • Driven to produce results quickly. You are are energetic and have a bias towards action. But that action is purposeful: you naturally focus on the things that matter the most and then move quickly to execute on them. When it comes to candidates, you move quickly to get them on the phone and push the process forward. People who know you well would describe you as someone who “gets sh#t done fast”.

  • An organization builder. You know how to hire, train and manage productive high-performance recruiting teams. You know how to set up and manage common recruiting software tools (e.g. Greenhouse, Gem, LinkedIn, etc) and use the data that comes out of them to quickly diagnose where your recruiting org is underperforming and back up your diagnosis with data.

  • An incredible recruiter. Other recruiters readily acknowledge that you are a top 5% recruiter in your own right. Your team looks up to you as someone who knows your craft well and that they can learn from.
